How to Email College Coaches

Updated October 18, 2026. General information, not legal or compliance advice; confirm with the school's compliance office.

NCAA recruiting rules limit what coaches can do and when. In most Division I sports a coach can't send you recruiting materials or electronic correspondence until June 15 after your sophomore year, and some sports have different dates.[5] You can still email first. Just don't read a quiet inbox before that date as a "no".

Follow-up rhythm

Send a short update when something real changes, like new film, a new measurable, grades or your schedule. Don't just ask "did you get my email?" Keep notes on who you emailed and when.

Know the calendar

Contact rules and dead periods vary by sport and division. Check the NCAA recruiting calendar for your sport (example: 2026-27 FBS football).[4] See also the recruiting timeline by grad year.
